Mr Murray Alston: Community (Chair)

With his wife, Wendy, his three sons and he emigrated to the UK in 1997. With a background in Civil Engineering and Quarry Management he joined a family quarrying business in the Forest of Dean and spent thirteen years with the company before selling it to a multi-national organisation. Following a period of seven years as a consultant to the quarrying industry he retired. He is a keen tennis, squash and golf player and together with his wife enjoys walking, cycling, skiing and sailing. His three sons all attended JKHS from Year 7 through to Year 13 during which time he was a Parent Governor and Trustee before resigning in 2014. 

Mr Andrew James Bailey: Parent (Chair, Finance Committee)

Andrew has two children at the school and was elected as a parent trustee in May 2015. Formerly chair of governors at a local primary school, he is an accountant by training. However, after a period of business consultancy in the SME sector, he is now proud to be involved in a business providing arts-therapy services in a variety of settings from adoption support to brain injury.

Mr Rod Barker; Community (Deputy Chair)

Rodney Barker was a Governor of JKHS 2010 to 2015, three of which were as Vice-Chair.


Rod spent most of his career in the City of London, successively as HR director of Charterhouse Group and Security Pacific International Merchant Bank, then Business and Technical Director of Allen & Overy. He has a BA (Hons) in econometrics from the University of Warwick. Professional qualifications included FCIPD, FCIM and FRSA.


Rod has lived near Ross for over 20 years. He was one of the founding Trustees of the Herefordshire Tertiary Education Trust which created the county’s new engineering university - NMiTE. His involvement in local organisations has included membership of a Parish Council, Rotary, Probus and the Hereford Historic Churches Trust and other village committees.

Mrs Lisa Chaplain: Parent

Lisa has two children who currently attend John Kyrle, with her third planning to join next year. She lives and works as an accountant in Ross-on-Wye. Lisa has been proud to serve as a governor of a local primary school for many years, chairing staffing and finance committees. As her children are growing older, she would like to continue to offer her support and experience to the pupils and staff at John Kyrle, aiming to achieve the best possible outcomes for our children.

Mr Nick Dale: Community (Chair, Health & Safety Committee)

Nick’s whole working career has been with Haigh Engineering in Ross-on-Wye (42 years). He started as an electrical apprentice, became maintenance electrician followed by two years as field service engineer before returning to the plant as electrical foreman. He then had seven years as a sales representative before becoming sales manager and a member of the senior team. Nick retired in February 2017 at the age of 58.
Nick is an active member of Ross Lions Club and serves on the committee at Ross Conservative Club. He also holds a helicopter pilots’ license and regularly flies. He enjoy many types of motor sports and photography.


Mr Nigel Griffiths FRSA: Headteacher

Nigel has been head of the school since September 2000, and holds office as a trustee in this role. As such, he attends all committees which are led by trustees who work closely with members of his senior leadership group. Nigel presents at all full board meetings and his deputies also attend these but do not vote. Nigel is a qualified lead Ofsted inspector and a National Leader of Education.

Mrs Diane Elizabeth Hudson: Community (Vice Chair, Curriculum Committee)

Diane has been re nominated by the trustees several times. She was initially a parent trustee, who was elected three times by the parent body. She has previously been Vice Chair under three different chairs of governors and is currently Vice Chair of the Curriculum Committee. Diane has experience as a parent governor of Ashfield Park Primary School and has retired from a career in secondary education as Head of Department. Diane currently enjoys her involvement with English Heritage Discovery Visits for schools.


Mrs Hayley Maria Knapper: Support Staff

Hayley has been a Support Staff trustee since 2012. She currently has one child at John Kyrle. Hayley’s role within the support staff is head of year and careers advisor. Hayley is link trustee to the sixth form and she is keen to continue with her role within school to maintain close links to the local and wider community supporting sixth-form students with their work-experience placements.

Mrs Julie Markey: Teacher

Julie has been a teacher trustee since January 2015. She has worked at John Kyrle High School since 2005 as a mathematics teacher and also as a head of year for lower school for the last seven years. Before studying with The Open University and gaining a mathematical sciences degree, Julie qualified and worked as a microbiologist in the National Health Service.


Miss Helen Mather: Teacher

Helen graduated from Cardiff University in 2009 with an MA in Religion in Late Antiquity. She has been teaching at John Kyrle since 2012 in the RE and History departments, and more recently has been working in lower school as ADC for Years 7 and 8. She has been an active supporter of the Uganda link since she came to JKHS.

Mr Andrew Middlecote: Parent

Andrew has two children whom attend John Kyrle. He has worked in local government for 26 years and currently works for Gloucestershire County Council as a highways manager. He is a Fellow Member of the Institute of Highway Incorporated Engineers. Andrew is also a a member and past president of Ross-on-Wye Lions Club. Currently he is secretary.


Mr Timothy Murray: Parent

Tim’s daughter joined John Kyrle in September 2017 and is loving every moment of it. A huge part of this is down to the school staff and the importance they place not only on academic success, but also to pastoral care. Tim welcomes the opportunity to be part of this caring, successful community. He is currently a governor at Walford primary school and has a good understanding of the roles of a school governor or trustee.  He enjoys working with the school staff to support them in all the responsibilities and challenges they face and to ensure the best possible outcomes for all pupils.
Tim currently works in further education and understands how important a secure secondary education is to enable pupils to achieve their goals and dreams. He is looking forward to contributing to the continued success of John Kyrle High School and, thereby, that of his children by sharing the experience and knowledge that he has gained through his own career and as a governor of a successful school.


Mrs Katherine Nicholls: Support-Staff

Kate has been a governor/trustee since 2001.  She was originally appointed as a parent governor and then moved to staff governor.  She is chair of the health and safety working party as well as link trustee for safeguarding and SEN.  Kate has had three children successfully go through John Kyrle High School.  Her role within the support staff is staff cover manager, transport and she manages lunchtime duty staff.

Mr David Potter: Community (Vice Chair, Chair, Curriculum Committee)

David taught in schools and colleges for 17 years, including a period in charge of a large secondary school.  He then worked in local authorities as education adviser and inspector, eventually becoming deputy director of education, in charge of school improvement.  He then worked as a freelance school improvement adviser, including leading Ofsted inspections, acting as a DfE adviser on schools in difficulties, and supporting schools and education departments in the UK and abroad.  David has lived in the Forest of Dean for over 30 years; in addition to being a trustee at John Kyrle, he is on the board of a multi-academy trust in the Bristol area.

Laura Salter: Local Authority

Laura started a career as a mental health nurse in 1999 working in both adolescent and adult services. In 2010 she went on to train as a clinical hypnotherapist and currently works locally running her own thriving practice. 

Laura is passionate about working within the local community to help promote positive mental health and wellbeing especially amongst young people. 

Mr Brent Allen Vinall: Community

Brent spent forty years in secondary education in the UK, teaching in grammar schools, a secondary modern, sixth form colleges, 11-18 comprehensives, a Tertiary college and an academy converter. His final post was deputy headteacher at John Kyrle, from which he retired in August 2012. Having lived in Ross-on-Wye for 25 years, he is committed to the success of JKHS for the benefit of future generations of students.

Mr Robert Wyn Leather: Parent

Robert works for a Multi-national Technology Company as a Business Development Director, he also runs his own consultancy business. Before this, Robert served for 16 years as an officer and fighter-pilot in the Royal Air Force. He has an MA in Physics from Oxford University and has one year of experience as a school teacher. His ethic is one of adopting maximum individual responsibility to attain goals that will improve the self, family and wider community. Robert hopes to adopt the position of mentor co-ordinator for the older JKHS students.
