Why Study History at JKHS?

History at John Kyrle High School is about far more than memorising dates and events — it’s about understanding people, power, and the forces that have shaped our world. Our students develop curiosity, analytical thinking, and the confidence to debate complex ideas with insight and respect.

These are the very skills that universities and employers value most — making History not just a subject, but an excellent foundation for future success.

Our Curriculum

Intent

We aim to inspire a love of learning about the past and its relevance to today’s world. Our curriculum helps students to think critically about evidence, form reasoned arguments, and understand different interpretations of key historical events.

Implementation

We follow the Edexcel A Level History specification, offering a diverse and balanced curriculum that spans both global and British history.

Topics Studied

Year 1

  • The Rise and Fall of the USSR (1917–1991) – Explore the political, social, and ideological forces that shaped the Soviet Union, focusing on communism, totalitarianism, reform, and collapse.

  • The German Democratic Republic (1949–1990) – Examine governance, surveillance, and resistance in East Germany, and its relationship with Nazi Germany and the USSR during the Cold War.

Year 2

  • Tudor Rebellion and Government (1485–1603) – Investigate how Tudor monarchs governed, managed religious change, and responded to rebellion during one of the most transformative periods in British history.

  • Coursework (NEA) – Students complete an independent investigation into a contested historical topic, exploring historians’ interpretations and constructing their own well-evidenced argument.

Assessment Structure

  • Paper 1: The Rise and Fall of the USSR (1917–1991) – 30%

  • Paper 2: The German Democratic Republic (1949–1990) – 20%

  • Paper 3: Tudor Rebellion and Government (1485–1603) – 30%

  • Coursework (NEA) – 20%

Impact

Students leave A Level History with the ability to think independently, argue persuasively, and evaluate complex evidence — skills that prepare them for higher education and the wider world beyond school.

Beyond the Classroom

At JKHS, we believe history should be experienced as well as studied. Our enrichment programme brings learning to life through a range of inspiring trips and activities:

  • Hampton Court Palace – Discover Tudor power and architecture.

  • Battle of Bosworth Field – Visit the site of a pivotal moment in English history.

  • Six the Musical (when touring) – A modern retelling of the lives of Henry VIII’s wives.

  • Berlin Trip – A powerful exploration of Cold War history, the GDR, and the Nazi legacy (cost dependent).

These experiences give students the opportunity to see history in action and deepen their understanding of the world around them.

Subjects That Complement History

History pairs exceptionally well with other A Level subjects, including:

  • English Literature – Develops analytical and essay-writing skills.

  • Politics – Explores power, ideology, and governance.

  • Sociology – Examines social structures and change.

  • Philosophy & Ethics – Encourages critical thinking and debate.

  • Geography – Provides context for global historical developments.

These combinations strengthen students’ academic profiles and open doors to a wide range of university courses.
