Why study Biology at John Kyrle?
Biology is the study of life itself — from molecules and microbes to ecosystems and evolution.
Our A-Level course combines academic rigour with hands-on experience, inspiring students to ask questions, investigate ideas, and think like scientists.
You’ll love this course if you enjoy:
- Understanding how living systems work
- Investigating the human body, genes, and the natural world
- Applying science to real-world challenges
- Developing analytical and practical skills for future study or employment
Our facilities and teaching
You’ll study in our state-of-the-art £2.4 million Science Centre, featuring:
- Modern, fully equipped laboratories
- Digital microscopes and data-logging technology
- Dedicated spaces for both practical and theory lessons

Course overview
Exam Board: Pearson Edexcel B (8BIO AS / 9BIO A2)
Year 12 (AS): Explore the building blocks of life
- Cells and biological molecules
- Enzymes and membranes
- DNA, genes and genetics
- Physiology of gas exchange and circulation
- Ecology and biodiversity
Year 13 (A2): Apply your knowledge to complex systems
- Energy transfer in ecosystems
- Gene technology and evolution

Fieldwork and practical endorsement
Hands-on experience is at the heart of our Biology course.
Students take part in a residential field course at the Field Studies Council Centre, Orielton (Pembrokeshire), studying marine and seashore ecology in depth.
Throughout the two years, students complete core practicals that develop essential scientific skills — from hypothesis testing and statistical analysis to precision measurement and evaluation.
Destinations and outcomes
Our Biology students achieve exceptional results, often surpassing their aspirational targets.
Many go on to study:
- Medicine, Dentistry and Veterinary Science
- Biomedical Science and Genetics
- Environmental Science and Marine Biology
- Nursing, Midwifery and Sports Science
Enrichment and support
We know our students well and provide the right balance of support and stretch through:
- Small-group tutorials and mentoring
- Regular progress reviews and personalised feedback
- University and careers guidance
- Enrichment trips and opportunities
The significance of Biology for future economies
Biology is not just a subject for today — it underpins the economies, industries, and technologies of tomorrow.
As highlighted in the UK Government’s 2024 report on Engineering Biology, innovations in the biological sciences and the bioeconomy are projected to unlock between $2 and $4 trillion in global economic impact by 2030 – 2040.
For students embarking on A-Level Biology, this means entering a field with real-world impact and future relevance. Modern biology drives progress in healthcare, agriculture, sustainable energy, synthetic biology, and environmental protection.
At John Kyrle High School, we make these links clear — showing how your studies connect to the challenges and opportunities of a changing world economy.
You’ll explore how biology contributes to innovation in green technology, bioengineering, and global sustainability, preparing you not only for top grades but for a future powered by biological science.
