CORE MATHS
Core Maths is a practical and engaging course designed to build on the mathematical skills developed at GCSE. It supports a wide range of other subjects and provides valuable skills for further study, employment, and everyday life.
Many employers and universities have noted that students who stop studying mathematics after GCSE often feel less confident when working with numbers and data. Core Maths bridges this gap by focusing on real-world applications that are relevant and useful.
What will I learn?
Core Maths focuses on applied mathematics — without the complex algebra or trigonometry found in A Level Maths. The course content is closely linked to real-life contexts, helping you to interpret data, solve problems, and make informed decisions.
You will study topics such as:
-
Financial Maths (including tax, loans, and budgeting)
-
Modelling and problem-solving
-
Probability
-
Data collection and analysis
-
Identifying trends and patterns
A typical question might be: “Keisha currently has a net annual salary of £35,302.40. She receives a promotion with a new gross salary of £63,000. How much more will she take home each month?”
How is the course structured?
-
The course runs for one academic year.
-
You will have five hours of lessons per fortnight
-
Assessment is through two 90-minute calculator-based examinations in the summer term
-
In March, you will be provided with a pre-release data set, which forms the basis for some of the examination questions
Core Maths is equivalent to an AS Level qualification (worth 40% of a full A Level).
Entry requirements
To enrol on the course, you must have achieved at least a Grade 4 in GCSE Mathematics.
Who is this course for?
Core Maths is ideal for students who are not studying A Level Mathematics but wish to continue developing their mathematical and analytical skills.
It is particularly suited to students taking the following subjects:
Biology, Chemistry, Computer Science, Economics, Engineering, Geography, Geology, Physics, or Psychology.
