School Transport
Travel to School
We encourage students to walk or cycle to school wherever possible, as this benefits both their mental and physical wellbeing while also helping to reduce environmental impact.
To support active travel, we provide a large, purpose-built cycle shelter with CCTV security, along with two pedestrian entrance and exit gates to the school site. Students who cycle to school are strongly encouraged to wear a cycle helmet and high-visibility clothing to improve their safety.
If walking or cycling is not possible, we encourage students to travel by bus. Bus travel helps to reduce congestion around the school, minimise pollution and carbon emissions, and lessen disruption to our neighbouring residents. Information about available bus services can be found below.
Where travel by car is unavoidable, we ask parents and carers to consider car sharing where possible and to be respectful of local residents. Vehicles must not stop in the yellow-boxed area at the front of the school, park on double yellow lines, or enter the school site unless collecting a student who is unwell or has mobility needs.
For students wishing to travel by bus, there are three options:
- Buses provided by Herefordshire Council
- JKHS contracted bus services
- Public service buses
Further details of each option can be found below.
Herefordshire Council School Transport
If your child attends their nearest suitable school and meets one of the criteria below, Herefordshire Council may have a legal obligation to provide free transport to and from school.
Eligibility Criteria
Your child may be eligible if:
- You live more than three miles from the school; or
- Your child is eligible for income-based Free School Meals and you live more than two miles from the school; or
- The route to school is considered unsafe for walking, even when accompanied by an adult.
If you do not meet the eligibility criteria, the Council may be able to offer a chargeable place through its Vacant Seat Scheme.
For further information about school transport and the application process, please visit the Herefordshire Council webpage: School and College Transport.
For students starting at JKHS, we recommend applying for a bus pass well in advance. The Herefordshire Council School Transport team can be contacted at:
schooltransport@herefordshire.gov.uk
The Council will contact families nearer the start of term with details of their allocated bus and route. Bus passes will be delivered to the school during the first week of term and distributed to students during tutor time.
JKHS Contracted Bus Services
JKHS contracts external transport providers to operate five dedicated bus services: three serving the Forest of Dean area and two serving the Little Dewchurch and Much Dewchurch areas.
Tickets for these services are available through our ticketing partner, ShuttleID, and can be paid either as a one-off annual payment or by monthly Direct Debit. Students present a QR code when boarding, which is scanned by the driver. This system enables parents and carers to view ticket information, receive boarding notifications and access tracking information.
Ticketing for JKHS Contracted Buses
Tickets can be paid in full or by nine equal monthly payments. For Direct Debit payments, an initial £25 deposit is required to secure the booking. The nine monthly payments will be collected from September 2026 to May 2027 inclusive.
